An area that was home to one of the earliest documented dwellings in Gloucester County has been added to the Virginia Landmarks Register. Point Lookout Archaeological Site is described as a “rural Euro-American domestic site that dates to the period located on Robins Neck in Gloucester County,” according to information from the state Department of Historic Resources.
In the midth century to midth century, the site was the home of John Robins. The Robins Neck peninsula was named after Robins, who built a dwelling on land there about , according to the DHR. A trash pit dating from the late 17th century to the early 18th century and a 19th-century ash and refuse area associated with a standing smokehouse have also been located on the property. Point Lookout has been documented to be the surviving centerpiece of a historically larger property that encompassed the northeastern tip of Robins Neck from the midth through midth centuries, according to the DHR.

Twenty years ago, two young archaeology students, David Brown and Thane Harpole, surveyed a farmstead site located in Gloucester County, Virginia, dating to the late 17th to early 18th centuries. The property was originally patented in the s by Robert Bryan and was eventually part of the adjacent Belle Farm plantation. After the Civil War, the owner of Belle Farm gave each of his freed slaves twenty acres of land, mostly along the north section of Vaughns Creek, in the vicinity of the site.
At some point in the 20th century, the land came into the possession of the Walker family, and subsequently was purchased by Mr. Morris Phillips. It was Mr. Phillips who approached these two talented archaeologists to ask about the artifacts that he had collected from his property. David and Thane examined the artifacts and suggested a formal survey of the site. With permission of the property owner, these two youthful and passionate archaeology students conducted a surface collection survey covering 1.
Fast forward to , and two old, and sometimes funny archaeology ASV certification students from Minnesota came along looking for a research project. David and Thane located the boxes, blew off the dust, and handed the boxes over to Jim and Carol, and the Morris Phillips Site was revived! During the mid-eighteenth century, Edward Gwynn conveyed a six-acre tract to the people of Gloucester County for building of a new courthouse and prison. Gloucester saw little development in the first half of the nineteenth century. However, the steamboat arrived in , and a regular delivery system for goods and mail was established. The fortification was abandoned by the Confederates and was in Union control by May, Union troops, however, still burned the village store, mills and barns, and the county jail.
From , with a stable county population of between 10, and 11,, there was little growth beyond the number of buildings recorded on late-eighteenth-century plats.
